Area farmers markets open with fresh produce, flowers (The Huntington Herald-Dispatch)
HUNTINGTON — The search for fresh tomatoes has begun.
With farmers markets opening in Huntington and Ironton Saturday morning, area residents woke soon in the hopes of finding fresh, locally grown breed.
Many residents were seeking tomatoes and corn, not yet available, at the opening of the Central City Farmers Market on Saturday. Don Bartram, president of the Cabell County Tailgate Farming Association, assured the public both items and more would subsist in favor of vent in the coming weeks. Until then, they could take their pick of potatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, beets, flowers, honey and more.
Bartram said other thing than 200 people shopped the market by 9 a.m. He expected the vendors to close around 10 a.m.
Local resident Jackie Collier was one of many people asking about tomatoes.
"We look forward whole year to the fresh furnish," she said.
Collier has been visiting the market in spite of several years, and planned to purchase potatoes without ceasing Saturday.
Lora Cremeans also went to the market in search of vegetables. She said she enjoys the local venue because buyers know what they’re getting.
"It’s fresh. You know it’s coming from the garden," she said.
Vendors also seemed to have existence enjoying themselves Saturday as they spoke with neighbors and friends about their bring forward.
Dan O’Hanlon, a beekeeper of 20 years, was selling honey. He said the market is an opportunity for people to buy fresh items from friends.
"It’s prodigious. It’s a chance to disgrace the carbon footprint and buy local, fresh food," he reported.
Susan Triest of Huntington, was one who came out to buy the local honey. She’s been purchasing from the market for years.
"I think it’sitting great," she said.
Hours for the Central City Farmers Market will be 7 a.m. until the food is gone on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through October. The market is located at 555 14th Street West.
The local farmer’sitting market in Ironton also opened at 8 a.household management. Saturday at 2nd and Vernon streets.
